Nuôi cá ở ruộng cấy lúa nước đã có lịch sử lâu đời trên thế giới, đặc biệt là các nước vùng Đông Nam châu Á. Nghề nuôi cá ruộng cũng có lịch sử phát triển lâu đời ở nước ta, tổ tiên của nghề này là ở miền núi phía Bắc, có nơi đã trở thành tập quán ương nuôi cá chép ở ruộng như huyện Bạch Thông tỉnh Bắc Kạn. Nghề này cũng đang phát triển mạnh ở một số tỉnh thuộc Đồng bằng sông Cửu long như An Giang, Cần Thơ, Đồng Tháp, Tiền Giang, Vĩnh Long có đến hàng nghìn hecta được áp dụng kỹ thuật nuôi cá ở ruộng lúa
