GREETING VIETNAMESE AMERICAN -Using personal question - Don’t need to receive the answer - Using the general greeting statements Vietnamese American Bác đến chơi ạ! Chị đang làm gì đấy? REASON VIETNAMESE AMERICAN Having community lifestyle Expressing their concern Giving prominence to the privacy Having individual freedom 2. GETTING ACQUAINTED WITH OTHERS VIETNAMESE AMERICAN - Using biography and background questions Introducing themselves - Praising about appearance, clothes - Talking about sport, music, etc Quê em ở đâu? Anh có người yêu chưa? Hi! I’m Ann! VIETNAMESE AMERICAN REASON VIETNAMESE AMERICAN - Asking for those information is Vietnamese custom. - Wanting to know clearly others Having community lifestyle - Respecting personal privacy - Personal privacy is inviolable Avoiding to ask for income, women’s age 3. PRAISING AND CRITICIZING VIETNAMESE AMERICAN Being praising tubby or chubby => happy Being said fat =>angry In the past AMERICAN VIETNAMESE REASON VIETNAMESE AMERICAN - Being fat means healthy. - Being fat is attractive. - Being fat is well reproductive. - Being fat is unbeautiful. - Being fat is the germ of diseases. Now VIETNAMESE AMERICAN Conception of beauty is being in good shape. Having a well- proportioned body is healthy and beautiful. COMPLIMENT VIETNAMESE AMERICAN Compliment= Compliment Compliment = Criticism Criticism = Compliment Compliment = Compliment Example 1 Sometimes “beautiful” shirt means too-short shirt. VIETNAMESE You wear a “beautiful” shirt today! REASON - Creating a mild feeling for both speaker and listener - Fearing criticizing someone - Equivocating - Praising means criticizing Example 2 Ugly baby = Cute baby Disobedient baby = Obedient baby VIETNAMESE What an ugly baby! What a disobedient baby! REASON Fearing that the ghosts and devils catch that baby. - Regularly saying: “The shirt’s color is suitable for you. Its pattern is also beautiful. However, it will be nicer if you choose another style.” AMERICAN Rarely saying : “ Your shirt is ugly.” REASON - Mentioning to the good points before the bad points - Being straightforward => Not making listener upset => Saying the facts 4. BEING MODEST “My standard is not good and I have not prepared carefully. I hope you can ignore my mistakes.” VIETNAMESE In reality: - Being very good - Having prepared carefully => Not being accepted “My standard is not good and I have not prepared carefully. I hope you can ignore my mistakes.” AMERICAN => Lacking of confidence REASON VIETNAMESE AMERICAN - Not praising themselves - Thinking that it is presumptuous. - Being afraid that everyone laughs at them. - Confidence doesn’t mean presumptuousness. - Talking everything in their mind 5. GIVING PRESENT VIETNAMESE AMERICAN “ This is a small gift.” “ It’s not expensive.” - In facts, it cost them a lot of time and effort. “ I try to buy this gift for all I’m worth.” “ It is very famous for its quality.” - It is true. Mình có món quà nhỏ tặng bạn! It’s hard to buy it! Vietnamese American REASON VIETNAMESE AMERICAN Not wanting the receiver to feel uneasy because of receiving an expensive gift. Proving their honesty III. CONCLUSION Because of being influenced by two different cultures, the Vietnamese and the American have some differences in communication styles. - The Vietnamese respect community lifestyle while the American respect individual freedom.
