Marks & Spencer (M&S) is Britain's favourite store. Tourists Jove it, too. It attracts a great
variety of customers, from housewives to millionaires. The duchess of York, Dustin lIoffman,
and the British Prime Minis1er arc just a few of its famous customers. Last year it made a profit
of 529 mmion pounds, which is more than 10 million pounds a week. It all started 105 years
ago, when a ,\'oung Polish immigrant, Michael Marks, had a stall in Leedsmarket. lie didn't
have many things to sel1; some cotton, a little \vool, lots of buttons, and a few shoelaces. Ten
years later, he met Tom Spencer and together they started staBs in many towns in the North of
"ngJand, Today there, arc 564 branches of M&S all over the world in America, Canada,
Spain, France, Belgium, and Hungary.

where and when the item was purchased. Most stores stipulate an amount of time, such as 60
